Officer "Subdued" Rank
*** NOTE: Price is per insignia and not for the set, if you require a set of two for a collar or shoulder boards then you must purchase this item twice. "Subdued" Rank There is a difference of opinion on the subject, but many believe that during the war Union Officers took to wearing "subdued" rank rather than their commonly known elaborate shoulder boards in order to still remain noticeable by their own men, but not so much from the enemy during battle. It is suggested the practice started amoungst officer's of the Berdan Sharpshooters, which is the unit of the officer pictured here with collar rank was from, but many period photos (as seen on my Pinterest and Social Media) of Union Officers shows the rank worn by many.
