Soldier ID Ring
Identifying each individual soldier regardless of rank or position was a new concept during the American Civil War.
The United States government nor the military adopted a regulated mandatory system for it. Rather private industry marketed the idea, and it became so common place that both marked and unmarked originals are still found today or pieces used for this purpose.
Though ID discs (period dog tags) were the first and mainly popular version of this. Many and more examples are found of simple band rings with soldier identification stamped on them.
